I wanted to capture how much gymnastics means, and the amount of emotion behind it for gymnasts. I interviewed two of my best friends and teammates, as well as myself. I asked what gymnastics means to them and what their favorite part about the sport was. I used short clips that I cut from the interview to use the responses in my audio story. After using that I wanted to use an audio clip that showed this emotion and feeling without having to put it in exact words. I found one of my most recent videos at Western Michigan where I received my career high beam score. The best part of that routine was my team cheering so loud for me in the background. I extracted the audio from that video and used it in my story. It really shows everyone the essence of team in college gymnastics, and how we support each other. The audio, even without the video, makes me emotional because its like I can hear my team supporting me without even seeing them. It is something special about gymnastics, and sports in general, and showing it with just audio enhances the power behind it.
My group members gave me some good critiques on how to improve my audio story. They told me to even out the volume levels of each interview to make it more cohesive. I originally had the first interview fading in, but after thinking about that critique I figured it didn’t need to be faded in. I adjusted the volume levels up and down, so each of them sounded the same. I also took the critique my group members made about having the final audio fade out. I did this, and really loved the results. The final audio is the background noise of my teammates cheering for my beam routine. The end is the loudest because I finished my best routine, and my entire team was so excited that they exploded in cheers. When it fades out it gives a really cool effect to the loud cheering at the end. All and all I think the critiques helped me tell my story even better.
Overall, my audio story is meant to show the love athletes have for the sport and one and other without showing a photo. Hearing directly what the sport means to people in their own words, but then hearing it is something very powerful. I wanted my audio story to tell you and then show you these things.
