Logo Sketch

My logo is about the connection between sports and fashion. Gymnastics has been a part of my entire life, and I feel it overlaps with fashion constantly. I wanted to think of a symbol in fashion that captures the essence of the whole industry, so I used a hanger. The hanger represents the entire industry, considering it revolves around clothing. The handstand is a basic in gymnastics, and gymnasts are taught to manipulate their legs in various ways to make the skill more visually appealing. I combined the two seamlessly to show how the two worlds collide in my life.

Graphic Collage

My graphic collage is a representation of the athletic world and the fashion industry colliding, as they do in my own life.  I used images from my personal life that reminded me of how these two topics coexist in my daily life.

The background image of my collage is the steps of the Nike store in Milan which has a quote written on them reading “Don’t change your dream, change the world.” –Nike Women. This quote inspires me as an athlete, but also has a person which is why I feel this is a core representation of the two topics working together.  Nike is an athletic apparel brand, which clearly targets athletes, but any individual can wear Nike clothes.  This is an important way in which fashion becomes inclusive, even when it is targeting a specific group.

I cut out other elements of photos that I felt represented this topic in my own life.  I used a cut out of a mannequin from a Dior store in Florence, which was a futuristic model that was reflective and didn’t bear any clothing they were selling. This was one element of a collection they were advertising in their store for athleisure.  I thought the mannequins build symbolized an athlete, and the fact that it came from a brand that wasn’t an athletic apparel brand stood out to me. Dior is a luxury brand, but athleisure is becoming relevant in all sorts of brands which is why I included this element.  I also included a photo of me looking in the mirror getting ready for a competition.  I felt this was an easy comparison to the fashion world because it looked very similar to photos I’ve seen of models getting ready for a runway.  To the right of that I included a photo of a Nike cropped windbreaker I have in my wardrobe.  Nike is an athletic apparel brand, but not all of their clothing is technical and for an athlete to wear while competing or practicing.  Nike is a great example of a brand that crosses over between sports and fashion.  This cropped jacket is clearly not a functional garment for athletics, but Nike sells it for the fashionable sporty consumer which is how they bridge the gap between those worlds.  The Nike Roshe Runs in the bottom left corner are another example of Nike bridging the gap between these two worlds.  The shoes were created as sport running shoes, but over the years has become a basic in many fashion lover’s wardrobes. The sneakers are a basic that you can add to any outfit to make it look like athleisure. I also included cut outs of designer sneakers from Chanel and Jimmy Choo.  The Chanel sneakers are definitely more athletic looking, the hot pink shoes, and definitely show designer brands crossing over into athletic apparel.  The Jimmy Choo sneakers, the gold shoes, are more representative of fashion being inspired by athletics.  These shoes are clearly a fashion item, and have no practical use in athletics, but they are a shoe that is used in sports.  This shows the two ways luxury fashion and athletics inspire each other.  Finally, I included a photo of what gymnast’s call “meet hair” which is just a tightly braided bun that you wear during a competition. It is another element of gymnastics that crosses over into the fashion world because of the time and preparation it takes for your look that day.  I feel this collage represents how athletics and fashion collide in my life daily, and how the two worlds aren’t so different in anyone’s life.

My group members focused on the possibility of adding more photos to my collage, softening edges of cut outs, and straightening my background photo.  I felt all of these suggestions were useful, so I started with straightening the background image.  I used the Straighten tool within Crop tool, to straighten out the stairs.  I also used the Perspective War tool to make the photo appear as if it was taken perfectly straight on.  I then added the photos of the Chanel and Jimmy Choo sneakers cut out from their original photo.  Lastly, I edited the Layer Masks I had created and added Feather to them, so the cut outs had softer edges.  I feel this enhanced the visual appeal of my collage, and helped tell my story even better.

Draft Graphic Collage

To create this collage I started by putting the background image of the stairs, and using the straighten tool to make the lines appear straight. I also used an Adjustment Layer to make the image black and white, allowing the other elements to stand out. I then took the other elements and cut them out of a bigger picture which allowed them to be the main focus. I used the Quick Selection tool and then created a layer mask for each of them. Any images that has harsh edges or lines, I used the erase tool at 0% hardness to create a soft edge.

Topic Post

Over the course of the next few months I will be creating various design projects based around a topic of my choice.  I chose to base these projects around myself, and here’s why.

I am a student athlete, so my life isn’t one of a typical college student.  Both semesters of school every year are filled with lifting, practicing, competing, and so much more that comes along with being a student athlete.  Many students at universities don’t understand the lives of student athletes, and the dedication that goes into their everyday lives.  I hope to show my readers the life of a student-athlete through my own lens.

Along with being a student-athlete, I am also a fashion merchandising major with minors in marketing and fashion media.  I want to combine my love of fashion with my passion for sports, and hopefully work in athletic fashion one day.  My projects will link these two topics to show how sports can be fashionable, and aesthetically pleasing just like other topics can be.

A few of the projects I will be completing this semester will be the graphic collage as well as the logo design.  I plan for my designs for both projects to depict how fashion meets athletics in my everyday life.  Fashion is beautiful art while athletics is difficult and grueling, so how could they possibly go hand in hand?  I plan to show my readers how the two coincide in my life as well as others.

My graphic collage will depict how sports play a role in my life as well as fashion.  I plan on showing photos of sports in their picturesque moments like team wins and beautiful moments in gymnastics especially.  This will help flow with the other photos I will add of fashionable items like athleisure that coincides with sports.

My logo will show a meeting between sports and fashion in my own world.  I will combine fashionable artistic elements to the logo while centering it around a sports moment.  As a gymnast myself, I will most likely use a gymnastics action photo in the center and add fashionable elements around it.  It will truly illustrate how the two separate worlds collide in my life, and how they go hand in hand.

The blogs I linked below are some blogs that inspired some of my ideas for this blog.  I linked a blog, Athlete Network, that is purely about athletes at the collegiate level and all aspects of our lives.  Sportsanista is a combination between sports and fashion which is the closest relation to what my blog will consist of. Athletikaty is another blog that combines athletic apparel with exercise which is very much the idea of my blog.
