Final Video Story

My video story was a depiction of my journey through gymnastics. I wanted to use footage of my awards and leotards throughout the years, some home videos of me doing gymnastics at a young age, and some personal interviews. I feel all this together helped paint the picture to viewers of what my journey has been like, and how far I have come in this sport.

I started off by recording videos panning through my medals and leotards, because I knew these would be good transitions that also helped show a piece of my story. Then I recorded two long interviews, one about my younger days in gymnastics and one about my current life with gymnastics. Finally, I found old home videos as well as current videos of my gymnastics and downloaded them for the video. I categorized the videos into bins, then cut each of the videos to the length I would be using. I would play the video, add an in point and an out point, then when I was happy with the clip I would use the Command+U shortcut to make it it’s own clip. I did this with all the videos until I had each of them at the proper length for the video.

The video starts with me panning through my medals with some of the interview clips playing in the background. I made sure the video of the medals was on V1, so it would overwrite the interview. I wanted the videos to tell the story with my words used as a background. I then cut to some old home videos of me as a young gymnast. I wanted to add this for a few reasons. Partially so I could show how young I was when I started, but also to show my transformation. After these videos I cut to the leotards through the years transition, and then start interviews about gymnastics in my life now. My newer college videos play over my voice, to show how far I have come in gymnastics. The final part of the video is my favorite. I ended the interview at a video of me dismounting the beam at a major competition. I had the noise come in immediately after my interview. You hear my team explode with excitement, and it fades out. I used the points on the volume bar to make points for the volume to start immediately after the interview, and then fade out. This created the ending I wanted where I talked about my team in the interview, and you heard them support me immediately after.

After reading my group’s suggestions for corrections, I went back and made the changes. One suggestion was to add music, so I added music from Free Stock Music. The track was called “Remember” and I felt it added a lot of dimension to my video. I made sure the track faded in and out to keep up with the flow of the video. Another suggestion was to raise the volume of my interviews, my group member said they were slightly hard to hear. I used the volume bar to raise the audio level. Overall, I think my video quality was increased significantly with these corrections.

Final Audio Story

I wanted to capture how much gymnastics means, and the amount of emotion behind it for gymnasts. I interviewed two of my best friends and teammates, as well as myself. I asked what gymnastics means to them and what their favorite part about the sport was. I used short clips that I cut from the interview to use the responses in my audio story. After using that I wanted to use an audio clip that showed this emotion and feeling without having to put it in exact words. I found one of my most recent videos at Western Michigan where I received my career high beam score. The best part of that routine was my team cheering so loud for me in the background. I extracted the audio from that video and used it in my story. It really shows everyone the essence of team in college gymnastics, and how we support each other. The audio, even without the video, makes me emotional because its like I can hear my team supporting me without even seeing them. It is something special about gymnastics, and sports in general, and showing it with just audio enhances the power behind it.

My group members gave me some good critiques on how to improve my audio story. They told me to even out the volume levels of each interview to make it more cohesive. I originally had the first interview fading in, but after thinking about that critique I figured it didn’t need to be faded in. I adjusted the volume levels up and down, so each of them sounded the same. I also took the critique my group members made about having the final audio fade out. I did this, and really loved the results. The final audio is the background noise of my teammates cheering for my beam routine. The end is the loudest because I finished my best routine, and my entire team was so excited that they exploded in cheers. When it fades out it gives a really cool effect to the loud cheering at the end. All and all I think the critiques helped me tell my story even better.

Overall, my audio story is meant to show the love athletes have for the sport and one and other without showing a photo. Hearing directly what the sport means to people in their own words, but then hearing it is something very powerful. I wanted my audio story to tell you and then show you these things.

Final Logo

This logo design represents two very important things in my own life, so it represents my website perfectly.  A handstand is the most basic skill in gymnastics, so I felt it would be a good element to choose as part of my logo.  When I looked at different pictures of handstands for my logo, I saw a drawing of a handstand with one leg bent.  This reminded me of the shape of a hanger, which is a symbol of fashion.  I wanted to find a way to combine the two, so I figured out how to manipulate the two symbols to become one.  To me, this logo is a symbol of gymnastics and fashion overlapping so easily.  The two are not something you would think would be one in the same, but to me they are.

I first copied a photo of a hanger into Illustrator, locked that layer, and then added a new layer.  On the new layer, I traced the hanger using the pen tool.  I then copied the photo of the gymnast in the same way.  After doing that with both photos I lined the outlines that I drew up, and saw how they fit together.  I used the Scale tool to make the two outlines sizes line up.  Then I used the Direct Selection tool to line the handstand drawing up with the hanger.  The legs needed to line up more equally, so I manipulated those point specifically.  Once they were lines up, I used the Eraser tool to erase the hanger in those spots, as the legs would take their place.  I then made the hanger’s stroke grey, and turned off the fill.  I made the gymnast a blush color, as that is my favorite color, using the fill and turned off the stroke.

As for my revisions, my group members suggested I smooth out the left side of the hanger because it had a section where it was bumpy.  I used the Direct Selection tool to move the anchor points to create a straighter line in that section.  It was also suggested that I add my initials to the design as it is a logo for my personal brand.  I used the Text tool to type my initials, then the Selection tool to move it into the desired position.  I changed the font to “Fashion Fetish” as I feel that reflects a bit of my personality. I feel this logo perfectly represents how seamlessly the two worlds collide in my life, sports and fashion.
